You may also need visas and other documentation, such as medical or vaccination certificates, to get into many other countries. If you’re intending to work in another country, you may need the equivalent of a work permit. You may also need translations of your passport and other documents, such as your birth certificate, in the language of the country you’re going to.
Restrictions when going Abroad – Before you go, check with the Foreign Office to see what your rights are and what preparations you need to make. (For travel information, call 0845-850- 2829; for information on visas, call 0207-008-8438; or visit the Web site at https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/foreign-commonwealth-office.)
Restrictions when going Abroad – You need a valid passport to travel out of the UK, but you should check that this passport is still valid by the time you return. Some countries, such as South Africa, won’t let you in unless your passport will still be valid for a particular period of time after you leave. Check before you go.
You won’t lose your British citizenship, no matter how long you stay away unless you decide to choose the nationality of another country that doesn’t allow dual nationality. You can live in France, for example, and apply for French nationality as well as British nationality, but if you want to become a United States citizen, you will have to give up your British citizenship.
